I have been reassembling my gearbox (46 Burman), this is grease filled, I have all the correct bits but when assembled the felt washer seems to be too tight.
As I see the arrangement the dished washer is clamped to the output shaft, when the drive sprocket is tightened, so it has to turn so it rubs on the felt, this just seems wrong to me.
To install the felt I had to "squash" it a lot in a vice so I could compress it enough to fit the circlip.
This box had a proper oil seal (It was hard and split) fitted but is a 46 stamped on the outer case so assume this had been modified. Is there a difference in the main casing between Grease and Oil boxes?
Have I done something wrong?
Any suggestions?
Steve

I would have thought you would be better to replace the oilseal with a new one. Then you could use a semi fluid grease like Spherol or mix with oil.
