Hello, my gearchange lever is getting very slow returning to it central position and feels sloppy I would like to replace the spring so before I remove the covers and cases are there any pitfalls I should be aware of. Thanks

One of the known weak spots on the Lightweights is the gear change return spring - they have a habit of breaking. Best to replace it, as it's not too hard a job and they are available for a few Quid from the club spares scheme. Janet's links are very helpful too.

Thanks for the replies, I have taken all the relevant bits off and the spring is indeed broken, strange thing I can't find the half that has broken off. Maybe its been put together like that it would be no surprise considerinig its history. What is the other spring for that fits into the plate with the two cut-outs?, My exploded copy is not too clear when I zoom and can't find an explanation.Cheers David

I think this may be related to the little pointer on the gear lever.

Sorry Janet I'm still an AMC virgin I should have worked that out for myself........
2 HOURS LATER...Bike back together now know the "other spring" is part of the ratchet mechanism for selecting gears.
