My G80 does this when the primary chain is too tight. Typically when the rear chain has yanked the gearbox backwards, due a loose gearbox adjuster/bolt. I should have said used to do this, because after I fitted dual forward pressure adjusters, one on each engine plate, this is no longer possible. Very simple and highly recommende mod.Edited by - TommoT on 17 Jul 2011 10:00:28 PM

I had a Capri that whooooed like blowing over the top of a beer bottle - eventually found that the blanking plug covering a deep fixing screw hole on the driver's wing mirror had fallen out.

Whistling aerials, Bonnet howling and voices in the head! what ever next. Perhaps I should try a tin foil lining in my crash helmet Groily!
But, I like Tommot's suggestion best.

I once replaced bearings in a car alternator to no effect, later to discover carburetor loose on manifold causing whistling noise.
Just a thought.

Mystery solved, it was the tin cover over the gearbox that sits on the engine plate. I became convinced that it was gearbox whine as the noise was most pronounced when accelerating in third gear ( the hardest working gear that usually starts to whine). When the engine revs reached a certain frequency it set up a reverberation in said tin cover.
