I just use my old sump oil from my car.

There is no problem using detergent oil in a dirty engine, unless it has stood since the '60s. Detergent oil has been around for 40 years or so, and it is very likely that such oil has been used in the engine previously.

Rebuilding engines which have seized or wrecked their bearings is good therapy during the winter

Is that offered as a reason for using non monograde oils?
