Side stand spring.

Post by fredflanagan »

I have just sourced a side stand for a G3 but I can't see where the spring attaches to the frame. Can anyone give me a way ahead with this or possibly post a photo for me.
Many thanks

Search previous threads for side stand info; the fixing holes for the spring in the off-side frame are described.
Best regards.

If you assemble the side stand onto the frame. Add the spring and take the spring across the frame, you will find 2 tiny hole on the inside of the frame that the spring loop threads into. They are easy to miss and easy to paint over.

I've just replaced the side stand spring on my 16ms and found that the hook end that goes through the two holes was just a bit longer than the original, so it wouldn't loop through. Ended up cuting off 3 or 4 mm and forming a nice round hook. This was from JSL - anybody else had a similar problem or maybe it was a one off. If it's a common problem I'll tell JSL next time I'm there.

You may find the spring was the correct length.
Wear of the hole and stand leg could easy account for the 3/4mm the spring needed to be shortened. Yes I have done the same, or the spring hangs a bit loose. Its easier than making good the wear.

Couple of other things... i've been told in the past that there are two sets of holes in the frame (maybe only sometimes...) - one set so the side stand lifts itself when the weight is taken from it, and another set so the side stand stays down unless you kick it up.

Personally, I favour the first option, so you can't ever ride off with it still down!

Also... a word of warning - if your spring is covered in oil, like mine was, pull it towards you with pliers and *NOT* by hand... mine slipped from my grip and the hooked part went into my finger and almost out the other side. Very painful indeed and it just missed the bone! I learned my lesson there...
