1960 AJS Model 31 Deluxe.
Can any one explain the exact function of the non return valve (ball and spring )fitted in the plate carrying the feed and return oil pumps.
The drilling goes right across the plate but there only appears to be a small hole from the return pump position.

Non Return Valve
That oil passage bleeds oil from the pressure pump back to the return pump to keep that pump primed.
