1608 try one tooth at a time so one up from standard on the gearbox if that's 17 give it a go. The engine is supposed to be busy it was designed to rev. Some modern high performance racing engines wont tick over at our normal running revs but they were designed that way.

My Brother has a 31 and is going to fit an 18, so I'll let him experiment - could save me buying a 17 and 18 just to experiment.
Thanks again

I fitted a 410 tyre and that made a significant difference to the gearing on my 16ms. You can just about get it into the rear fork. Made the little 350 much less busy at 55mph.

I find one tooth up on standard at the gearbox OK - and I'm not a 10-stoner, far from it sadly - on a Mod 20; ditto on a Gold Flash A10, which has a lot more mid-range torque. (But revs never killed anything either.) A CSR would carry an extra tooth on the 'box without any trouble, I'd have thought. Never tried playing with crankshaft sprockets though.
Both my above have old-fashioned SM tyres on them - I agree, tyre changes can make quite a bit of odds.

Just an up-date. Fitted 18 tooth to the gearbox, and its a great improvement all round. Well worth the effort.
Thanks for the advice

I am finding the 21 tooth I fitted to the 350 single a great improvement. Went on a 60 mile run yesterday, very happy at 55 to 60 and I did sneak a 70 on a slight downhill. It runs in top at 30 quite happily and is only a bit more grunty to pull away from rest.
