12V Dynamo in 6V 1951 G9

Post by ChrisD200 »

Hi all, I'd welcome guidance on my next step. I had the dynamo rebuilt (a Lucas E3L-L1-O) but inadvertently the builder thought the bike was wired for 12 volt and wired it accordingly. I didn't know and just reinstalled it and rode away! Ooops. None of the lights work, nor does the hooter. Has the CVC box saved me from a complete burnout? Since there is no fuse in the early G9 circuitry, what damage has happened and where do I start looking? The manual is predictably silent on such acts of stupidity!
Thanks, Chris

I don't know any difference in the wiring on dyno equipt bikes between 6v & 12v. The CVC box controls the voltage not the wiring. Other differences are lamp bulbs & hooter but most 6v horns can be adjusted to work with 12v and can be acually heard.

Cheers, Don.

G'day matey, when i fitted a 12volt car dynamo to my G80 outfit i altered the internal wire's due to the dynamo spinning the opposite way. Just a thought.

Hi Chris, I would expect you saying something about yes/no charging and the state of the battery. Did you mean the battery is exhausted all of the sudden?
The dynamo should be properly wired for the direction of rotation. When also properly polarised, the dynamo can do no harm even when it's a 12V type. In the 6V installation, the dynamo will not be able to supply sufficient current for the lights.
