identify my gearboxes?

Post by zorba69 »

i have a stock 53 G9 twin superclubman (maroon & chrome under black), the only thing not original are the speedtwin hotdogs..
Gearbox is a 4 spd serial # GB26K55 , W815 , 937.
I thought it was supposed to be a Burman B52 on that model?

I also have an unknown box serial GB46M56 , 425. (theres a bit of wear on the casing & might be missing a # or two in that area.
13 t sprocket..

Similar casing to my matchie box although the gear indicator hole is machined but is not actually a hole in the casing as such..
Overall workmanship on the face of the casing is of a lower standard than my G9's...does not have opening for magneto...

Burman also?

thanks

Hi Chris, Looking in Christian's archives. the GB26K55 is from a '56 G11, made by Burman in October '55. Can't find the other one, perhaps Ariel er Panther? Dave.

Is it not true that B52 is incorrect description for the later Burman gearbox -(mine is a CP) - The gearbox type is B - the initial year 52 hence B52 - but boxes manufactured in later years cannot by definition be B52 ?

Once a B52, always a B52. Cheers, Don.

Hold on Don, isnt a B52 something completely different on your side of the pond??
Regards KK
Top tip - if it needs more than 2 bolts to hold it on, its probably important...

Just like the WD Matchy. Called a 41/G3L when introduced in 1941 (July, I believe), it retained that monicker through to the end of hostilities in 1945.
