Thanks to all for your help. Thorntons are able to supply me with a +40. I am told that a Heplex 4453 is the correct piston type for this bike. She is still a long way from that first spin, but another piece of the puzzle is solved.

Yes 4453 is ok for that machine it is of 6.85-1 cr fitted to most 250 AJS's you can also use 7735 for some extra poke at 10-1 these pistons have oil rings with them unlike the cone shaped 4453
