Front Brake shoes

Post by mikeydpippin »

Searched the forums not found an answer to this one.Sorry if i've missed it.
Fitting new shoes to my G3 i find with just the thrust pins the brakes fit with slight scraping on the drums, but the adjuster is at it's very maximum, just catching on the end of the threaded adjuster.
When adding the thrust pin washers the shoes wont fit in the drum.
I guess i will need to sand down either the shoes or the drum,Could someone advise the best way to do this,
Thanks in advance.

Ideally the new linings should be trued up on the brake plate in a lathe.
sanding them is hard work and never satisfactory'
Sounds like your cable inner is too long, cable should have no effect on lining/drum fit.
check that there are not any thin shims stuck under the pins.

Do you have the wheel axle shaft nut loose, so the brake backing plate can centralise it's self in the drum when you expand the shoes with the shoe expanding arm?

Paul

forgot to say,.... once the shoes have been centralised, the axle nut must be done up tight again!Edited by - paul knapp on 30 Oct 2008 05:05:33 AM

Thanks Paul,Yes all loose and set as per manual.
It seems the cable is 1/4" too long,

We are talking about the front brake here are'nt we.
Use thinner washers - those supplied by the Club are very thick - I have a variety of different thicknesses for this purpose and its always necessary to slacken the centre nut etc, apply the brake hard and keep it on as you retighten the nuts etc.
Mine spin without a sound and the arm travel is about 3/8" at the end that matters

Didn't think of that, thought supplied would be correct.
I guess any washer size would be okay, but with thinner gauge.
Will try that,Many Thanks,
Will let you know.

I just read the first post properly, you should not need any shim washers under the pins with new linings, the idea is that they took up wear.

The washers are generally referred to as hardened. I don't think this because they need to be to perform the function but that softer materials may spread slightly and prevent removal that's my guess anyway so use thinner washers with caution. I still think if you centralise the backplate as described and sort out what appears to be a brake cable that has its inner too long you wont have a problem, other than it will take time to bed the shoes in but this process can be speeded up as noted in other responses.

I have used non hardened ordinary 5/16" washers for the past 30 years, I have never had any problems using them. Surely for a steel washer to compress would take a far greater force than we are going to be able to exert with either hand or foot.
