My 53 G80S wheels appear to be painted with a silver color hammer tone paint.
Is this likely to be a bodge job sometime after sale of the new machine or was painted rims a standard feature or option on this model?
I suspect the rims should be chrome but I don't want to rush off and make that investment only to find it is incorrect for the year and model.
I also need to replace the seals on my push rod cover tubes. I assume this requires the head to be removed and replaced?
Cheers, Brian

Due to a shortage of Chrome in 1953 the rims and some other brightwear was 'Argenised' which was a silver finish. The head has to be removed to fit new seals. Go for Viton O rings instead of the rubber sleeve which hardens and leaks. The club sells them as a kit.

The 1953 sales brochures for both Matchless and AJS mention that export models have chromium plated wheel rims, as Brian is in Australia shouldn’t his bike have been supplied with these from new or does “export” only refer to those machines destined for North America?

Yes I didn't notice the Queensland location. I honestly don't know if the bikes exported to Australia had chrome rims but if it were mine I would I would go for chrome or stainless steel. It depends how original you want it.

Thanks for your feedback. Its not super original in the sense it has a solo seat and a non standard luggage rack. Engine, frame and gearbox are matching. I think chrome or SS would look better so will probably go that way.....at great expense!
