I was having a moment there, a particularly silly one. Of course, reducing the compression ratio would have no impact on the swept volume.
I'll edit that out!
Idiot.

Re: The new 250 A.J.S.
It certainly looks similar now I've viewed an image of the CBR250R.
How did the cc go wrong though?
"The CBR’s single cylinder motor makes a fairly acceptable 26bhp, which is enough to see 75mph on an open road." from a review on Bennett's Insurance website.

Re: The new 250 A.J.S.
Herald Classic 250 (Suzuki GN250 engine - 21bhp and 20ft-lb torque). I bought mine new (the 'Mutchless' ) 7 years ago.
Cruises happily at 60 to 65mph and nippy. Light weight (130kg) but obviously it buzzes a bit, unlike a lazy and relaxed AMC long stroke single.
I've only done about 6,000 miles as I don't 'like' it very much. I've only used it on section runs and a couple of Jampot rallies and French trips. The riding experience is nothing like my beloved Marigold which I can no longer ride with only one useable arm, but I've never had any mechanical issues with the bike.
