For a 1956 (early) Matchless G3LS magneto type. I'm looking for the dots (and number) to be used for the inlet and exhaust gears. The literature is a bit confusing.
Both gears have three dots, a assume that dot 3 should align with the pinionmark but I'm not sure about the exhaust (also 3 dots), should this be dot 2?

Re: Timing dots
Here is a perfect explanation by Video:
And here is some literature.

The Video also gives a good explanation of which dots to use by orientation of the cam lobe. So it doesn't matter if you have 1, 2 dots. I haven’t heard of 3 dots, but this might be beyond my experience.
Cheers Yves

Re: Timing dots
Oh and it doesn’t matter if g3 or g80. The principle is the same.
And If I remember right, the reason for the multiple Dots on the Gears is, because at one time, AJS and Matchless had differing positions for the Magneto, one in front of the Cylinder and the other behind. Therefore the timing Gears are swapped accordingly and two sets of dots where needed. 1 dot used for rear mounted magneto and 2 dots for front mounted mag.
