Convert dynamo from positive to negative earth ..

Post by Taid »

This topic has been touched on over the years, but nothing, as far as I can find, specific.

Modern bits of electronickery I am contemplating fitting tend to want 'Negative earth' wiring and as far as I read it is a (comparatively) simple job to convert the dynamo by 'flashing' the field coil.

I would appreciate a simple step by step list of instructions to do the job.

Thanks

I used the MatchlessCluess instructions to do mine. It's very straightforward, in fact it takes a lot longer to read about than to do.

Why do you want to change to Neg earth?
You said it's because you plan to fit modern electrickery (LED headlamp and flasher units?). If so, they are available in 6 or 12v and Pos or Neg earth.

really, it's electronickery ..

I've got the Smart Turn and Smart Brake System stuff which is negative earth .. I'm just awaiting a response from them as to whether it can be used positive earth, though looking at the kits and installation instructions, I doubt it

Ah, right, that's a new one on me. Very elec-trickery. I had to look it up:

https://safer-turn.com/smart-brake-module/

The Smart Brake module uses accelerometer and motion detection sensors combined with proprietary algorithm to detect when you are engine-braking or down-shifting.

It's an intelligent system that doesn't interfere with the actual brake light operation.

It simply senses when the bike is slowing down and operates the brake light in the situations when you're not actually applying the brake.

Until I bought this bike a month ago, I hadn't ridden a bike more than a hundred yards for over 55 years .. I figure I need anything that could improve my safety ..

Totally agree with that. My 'Hmm?' was to give it some thought as I know to my cost, having lost the use of my right arm and hand after being hit by a lorry nine years ago and can only ride now after fitting a dual clutch and brake lever unit. One needs all the safety stuff available when you're down to your last arm ;)
(The flimsy top brake cable was a temporary experimental one).
