1965 rear mudguard support tubes

Post by ajscomboman »

Has anyone got any pictures of the rear mudguard support tubes fitted to the rear suspension top bolts on a 1965 AJS/Matchless 650 with Norton mudguards and wheels. I am missing the tubes, have the grab handles and sleeve nuts that go through the mudguard but have no idea what the tubes look like.

Just noticed AJS is fitted on the suspension bolt, but Norton has a fitting point to the rear of the suspension bolt.
Most road models have the grab handles except CS / CSR's which has different support bracket.
Seems the bracket is 65/66, if this bracket is what you refer to. Looks easy to make for someone in the trade.
Approx angle of bend could be discovered holding a simple tool against the picture. I used the tool a lot when making jigs. What I had to make was to display mainly cosmetics, in odd shape bottles and boxes. I was just given the products to get dimensions etc. from. This simple tool could be adjusted to fit the product angle zero degrees upwards.

None of those match exactly Rob, the closest is the middle picture but the grab handles are shorter. I'm assuming the handles are correct as they line up perfectly with everything when bolted to the mudguard. Just can't find any pictures of 029440 and 029441.

No John, the 65 has the ribbed Norton guard and 2 short grab handles. There is a gap between the handle and the guard approx 1 1/2" and I'm assuming that it must be a hollow tube or solid with a recess for the sleeve nut that goes through the guard to fit into. I've nothing else to go on as I've never worked on a late machine before. Could be my interpretation of the part numbers and description is wrong and in reality the support tube are in fact just spacers.

This may be a better picture... while it is a single I assume the arrangement is the same.

On 1963 models the spacer is part of the grab handle

Looking at Johns pictures Rob, the sales cat pictures may be confusing, they appear to show the stays straight, but they may be bent to also act as grab handles as seen from Johns pictures. The pics showing the U shape one bit type that bolts on top of the guard seems to be the CS CSR type. Pic's I posted came from sales cat's & bikes from the photos section on this website.
