Hello,
Nearing the end of the restoration of the 1941 G3L and now paying attention to the finer aspects. Fixing Gear Change Indicator is now in focus.
What is the correct procedure to fix this? Is this held to Control Spindle using a Nut. Is this 171-X (Please help with the dimensions) or is there a special part for this as shown in the pic?
I have marked 2 types of fixing here. Please advice
Type 1
Type 2

Re: Matchless G3L - Gear Indicator Fixing Methods
I'm not particularly familiar with the CP gearbox and from memory a nut secures the indicator, but it depends upon the year and whether the gear indicator shaft on your gearbox has an internal or an external thread.
EDIT:
The '41 (yours) had a nut according to the Spares List:

The '49 had a bolt according to the Spares List:

You can save yourself a lot of time and doubt by familiarising yourself with the available documentation in the archives.

One is a nut on a stud the other is a bolt with a special head. Given the tendency for swapping parts as repairs were undertaken it could be either.

Thanks so much for the updates. Like you advised one of the things I should do is to compare parts list of various years.
One last question. What is the size and dimension for 171-X , the nut to retain the indicator to the spindle.
Mine is totally knackered and should use a Tap and Die to fix this. Please help
