Improving Drum Brakes
Any tips please? Fitted new shoes but very poor stopping power.

They take time to bed in, give it a run and keep brakes on a bit to clean off muck stuff, you may feel them start to bite.

Would you avoid or advise the chalk and sandpaper treatment?

I recently fitted new front brake shoes to my G80 and also cleaned and adjusted everything just like we're meant to. Initially, the brake was scary with faint retardation being just noticeable if I pulled on the lever with all my might. Now, 1000 miles later the front brake has improved to be just rubbish like it was before.

Do you "center" your brakes by applying them as you tighten the center nut up. I find it helps and even the slightest assistance is a boon with the naff brakes of the past.
Once centred the shoes will bed in to their best.

There are threads on how to improve the brake, a particularly good one with pics from Spriddler which worked for me. Give the Search function a go.
