Engine shock absorber spring

Post by FergusandTed »

Hello
Any help / advice appreciated I have a spring for the engine shock on my 18 project but I'm not sure it's the right one
it's square section steel 1 3/4" long 1 5/8" inside diameter 2 3/16" outside
IMG_2388.JPG
The inside diamieter is much larger than the back of the cam
Is this correct
Thanks in advance
Mick

Not sure f I could tell if a spring was for 350 or 500 I am sure the 500 is stronger than a 350.

Sorry for the size of the pic 😱
It's 1inch 3/4 long which i understand is the correct length for the 500 but it's the diameter that doesn't seem right
It's a lose fit on the rear of the cam is that correct

Difficult to see how slack the spring is on the back of the cam. What's the fit of the large dished washer / cap that fits under the retaining nut?

The cap / end washer is has been made specifically and looks like it was turn from one piece of steel and fits snugly into the spring
The difference between the back of the cam and the inside diameter of the spring is 3/16" just seems to loose but in every other way it looks right

See my reply to George Kaplan's post (Hitchcock devotee?) on similar topic.

The turned caps are, IMHO, better kit for longevity. If that is a good fit then your spring should be right?

I also found the square section springs were better.

I popped in to see Les at Russel Motocycles and it turns out my spring was from a twin
I don't know where the cap/washer came from but it looks home made
Les did have the correct spring and cap (not square unfortunately)
Cheers for the replays

And guess where the spring and cap probably came from??? The parts service more than likely, we do supply Russell Motors.
