Looks like a 1955/6 Matchless G80CS, or possibly G3LCS.

Agree with Dave, although AJS were only badge different, with a little photo shopping you can just make out the Matchless winged M logo on the timing cover.
I tried to upload the pic of the logo, but got the file empty warning. This usually means we have exceeded our picture up load allowance. Our webmaster Eamonn will free up some space when time allows.

Looking at the bottom of the ali sliders, they're square as opposed to the rounded style for 56, also the rear pillion pegs would indicate that the bike is more likely a 55.

Looking at the pipe size I would say it is a 350

55 onward wheel hub, earlier forks, N1 magneto, so it could be up to and including 55 350
