Mesh oil filter

Post by Martin.S »

I have here an oil filter that came with my project, the mesh filter itself is 6 1/2" long, it has a fine inner brass mesh and the coarse steel outer mesh.
As you can see I've knocked the fixed filter out of chrome nut.
Should this filter have a felt inside? and the fittings - are they the same as the loose fitting filter?

It was meant to be a one piece item and not meant to come apart! No felt simply 2 grades of mesh that you simply have to rinse in thinners or petrol. Best put it all back together now.

You can buy all the parts to fit the modified filter which are in the parts list comprising end cap with hole, long filter (silly money!!!), end cap with recess, spring and chrome screwed cap ( like the bit you have knocked off your original filter)

To be honest I've bought all the bits to fit a felt filter but cant find a 6 1/2" filter with the felt on the inside.

Are the club spares ones still the wrong way round? I bought one a while back and it was correct, but the current photo of the filter on the website is most definitely wrong!

They shouldn't be, that old stock was returned ages ago. The picture is an old one so not correct.

There's not much on that list that is correct - I spent the extra £10 when I joined the club for the spares discount- what a waste of money that was!

Brain like a sieve - but I'm sure the young lady on the end of spares line told me either that the felt was on the outside or they were out of stock - one of the two.

My understanding of this situation is that the last batch of filters were supplied by a new supplier as the original supplier had retired. when they arrived and identified to be wrong, they were returned and we are waiting for the new stock to arrive. If you are not happy with the £10.00 spares fee send me an email and i will arrange for a refund provide you have not order anything yet.

All you L/W owners do is gripe about money and cost of parts! What do you expect when buying a low volume motorcycle, that even in it's day parts were always hard to obtain. The market for repro parts is always going to be low and costs high when compared to the H/W's as the demand simply isn't there in enough volume to make the unit cost similar.

You could do something really radical and go out and find original parts and get them priced up to see if the club would fund production. You'll be shocked at just how hard it is to find companies willing to carry out work for you, especially as you'll be talking low volume.

One Hampshire member has done so recently and that part, although not large, was manufactured and is now in stock.

We're looking at rear sprockets but at £103.50 ea I'm sure you'll not give that a second thought! Unfortunately my friends that is the true cost of producing these parts nowadays in low volume on specialised CNC machines that cost a fortune to buy and staff to run them.

Small engineering companies that we used to use in a cottage style way are no longer in an abundance and is impacting on the unit cost of parts.

That's a bit harsh, Rob! (as is Martin's comment, above).

At a production run of nigh on 20,000, Lightweights aren't exactly what I'd call a "low volume" motorcycle. However, the spares situation is poor and the club do a great job of sourcing what they can. I'm grateful for that - my bike wouldn't be on the road without the club spares clutch centre, for example.

I think, however, club spares could raise their game a little bit. Wrong photos, wrong descriptions can go unfixed for months. I've emailed them with suggestions and not even got an acknowledgement. So I gave up helping.

I totally understand that it's difficult for club spares to get everything right. The answers are right here, among the membership.

How can we get club spares better linked up with the rest of us? You do a sterling job, Rob, but it's not fair to rely on one person to sort this out.

Suggestion: why not have a section here on this forum for the club spares to use? Parts availability news, appeals for part sources, corrections, stuff like that?
