Piston
Removed top end on friends 1955 g3ls. The piston has a series of groves the length of the piston. I'm assuming this is for dragging extra oil up the bore. Can't find any information on it. Looks too good to be DIY. Can anyone shed any light on it.

Re: Piston
I've never seen vertical grooves in a piston skirt only the splits in a 'split skirt' piston. Theres usually more than enough oil delivered to the bore without the need for any modification. Interested to see if anyone else has an idea.

Re: Piston
Sorry, when I said the length, I didn't mean that they were vertical. There are 5 grooves running horizontally down the piston, below the rings.

Re: Piston
I take it you mean they run horizontally around the piston, parallel to the rings. Could it once have been a wire wound piston, now missing the wire?bob121 wrote:Sorry, when I said the length, I didn't mean that they were vertical. I had one like that in the matchless engine when I bought it.

Re: Piston
Spaced further apart than in the picture. Probably 1/4 " apart. Grooves are almost wide enough to take a ring.
