Rightly, or wrongly, I fitted an AMC gearbox from a 1960 AJS M18 behind my (nominally) 1954 Matchless G3 engine. It works fine but the gear ratios aren't ideally suited to that engine. First and second are quite close together, as are third and top but there is a big jump from second to third which necessitates reeving the engine harder than I would like in second before making the change to third.
Were all the AMC gearboxes fitted with the same internal ratios or were they changed to suit whichever make/model of bike they were fitted to? Ideally, I would like to either raise the second gear ratio a little or lower the third gear ratio a bit.
Are/were different internal gears available that might allow me to do this?
