Don't you mean "nadgers" Graham?
It's the cold weather. I remember losing mine whilst swimming in the River Dee one April. A girlfriend (not mine) applied hot towels. Surprisingly, same thing happened the next day,........and the next, .........and the next,........She eventually twigged it.
Not funny, having it twigged.
