Re: nr1 magneto
You do need to fully retard the lever when starting, or it will kick back violently. The reason for this is, timing is done with the lever in the fully advanced position. The points gap may have also opened , advancing the ignition a little. So check those two points first.

Hi Rob
Thanks for your reply.Yes the lever is in the fully retard position,
, but will check the points first.the magneto is one that i am not
familiar with,so thourght it best to ask first, before tampering.
thanks again.

Re: nr1 magneto
Are you timing your engine with the lever in the right position. Their is a slack wire and taught wire version of the N1 and both have to be treated accordingly

Re: nr1 magneto
If the cable enters at the front of the mag ie near the frame slack is advanced. Pull to retard .
I set mine 50/50 when I start up then fully advance when it's started and leave it alone .
Mine is a Lucas nr1 mag

Re: nr1 magneto
HI All
First thanks to all replis.
I was told to push the advance/retard lever fully
forwards to start, but as the cable enters the mag
on the left when looking at it from the left hand
side, maybe I was misled. I could not see how to
remove the the points cover, and as i said i am not
familiar with the nr1, with the cover removed it
would be easy to see what was advanced or retard.
But as you get older it get hard just getting down,
and then you have to somehow get back up.
Thanks all.

Re: nr1 magneto
If the cable goes in from the left and front looking at the bike from the near side then you need to pull the lever right back towards you to retard the ignition. Tight cable equals retard and slack cable equals advance
