662 dxu
Hello,
I can't help you directly, but I've just bought another Model 8, and its registration is 698 DXU! I'm thinking 1) Maybe they both came from the same batch from a (London-based) dealer (as XU is London) or 2) Both have been assigned an age-related plate (perhaps DXU is an age-related series? I can't say yet as I don't have the new Model 8's logbook).
Cheers,
Al

The reversed DXU series is an old unissued London series now used as age related by DVLA. It will be difficult to find original number unless you can trace it via frame number to the dealer who sold it new. You could then (if it was in a county where registration records survive in the archive) go along to that counties record office to search the records to hopefully find the number. Someone on here did just that in Hertfordshire a few months ago with success I believe. If it was orginally registered in London no chance as all records were destoyed. Also at the end of it the reg. may have been sold on & is now on another vehicle.

My Glass's guide shows that 662 DXU was issued in London between March 1962 and January 1963.
The XU age related series are different. It started with --- XUA around 2004 and finished with --- XUY this year. They are now issuing --- YUA and --- YUB.Edited by - les ward on 07 Nov 2010 8:50:30 PM

I think Les is absolutely right here (as usual!), my 698 DXU bike was originally registered in London in June 1962. Or more correctly, its original frame was registered then, shame someone else put another frame in it and din't bother to tell the authorities...

Re: 662 dxu
I owned 671 DXU, also a 1962 Model 8, from Dec '67 to about Sep '72.
Which supports the original batch of registrations theory.
By the way, I see from DVLA that 671 is still current, if anyone knows of the bike I would be (very) interested.
