Alloy hub brakedrum width
I have to choose a front wheel hub to rebuild to make a working bike based on a 1969 G12 DL engine and frame.
I have several front wheel alloy hubs. All but one are the type with a flanged brake drum & attach to the alloy hub with cross head screws.
The exception has a flangeless/screwless brake drum apparantly cast into the alloy hub & it is 3/8 inches wider than the other type. Clearly the brake shoes used in it were the standard AMC width as there is a little, unworn ridge left around the outside edge/mouth.
Is this latter, wider, wheel hub/brake drum a 1963 type? Or earlier? Why is it different? Is it better or worse in terms of braking effect/fade?
Best braking is more my concern than "concours" rectitude in this case.
Anyone know?
Thanks,
Rod
