Re: GS80 engine numbers?
Have a look here http://www.ajs-matchless.com/pic_display.asp?id=754 to see what engine numbers actually look like. Character height is about 6 mm at my '54-'56 road engines.

Re: GS80 engine numbers?
My immediate reaction is that's the wrong half of the crankcase for the engine number!
The engines were numbered on the drive side case.

Re: GS80 engine numbers?
Ok so there are no numbers where they should be on the engine, have you split the crankcases? if so post any casting numbers (there are normally raised not stamped) and someone might be able to come up with the dates those casings were used.
I'm sorry but the frame number given does not match AMC's frame numbering system. Where is this frame number stamped? that information will help with rough dating.
Can you pull the bike out and take better pictures of the frame? There appears something odd about the oil tank and a couple of other things that I can't quite make out, better photos would help.

The oil tank what you mean is that is in this model the airbox .
The oil tank is on the left side of the bike and the airbox right.
The numbers in the crankcases are 017385 L 47TY
017386 V 29G55
The photo's oft the bike make i so soon as possible!

Re: GS80 engine numbers?
I came across a g80 engine yesterday, with no number on it. I cant find any damage to show a number was ever stamped on the cases. I have been told in the past, som were never marked for some reason. Maybe this is another one.
Just have to look closer for the frame number.
Did plumstead have an unguarded back door?

Re: GS80 engine numbers?
I heard from an ex-Plumstead tester that 'some' testers would occasionally drop bikes off at home and get the bus back to the factory.
