The Wednesday Keynsham run was eventful for some. Even before the start John Hopton was unhurt when shunted from the rear on his Honda, that’s the downside of having a bike with brakes. John Allen had the AMC gearbox lock solid on his G3 but at least it was at very low speed and he was not in Switzerland. It turned out that the layshaft ball bearing race had collapsed and jammed the gears. Seven of us rode in the Spirit of the 60s, Steve Clash was pleased to have done 220 miles in total although someone else trailered their bike to the start. Tony got to the start but then had small particles of cork from the tap blocking his Mikuni jets and decided to head back the pretty way. Vic also had problems with his James 2 stroke twin initially refusing to start after a petrol stop. The VMCC South West Coast run, which is the local season opener, had a longer route of about 50 miles this year. This was welcomed by many who thought the original was too short, but confused those who went to Portishead coffee stop to find that the long route went straight to the lunch at Clevedon. The Wells Classic club’s Hare and Tortoise run was good with 3 loops out from Wells punctuated by refreshments. Tony and Pete Manley took part, BSA and Ariel mounted respectively. The Wednesday run saw Ady’s A10 out for its first full run. It was in a sulk to begin with and spat off its left exhaust pipe when it backfired. After kicking it back on, the bike ran perfectly. Near to the end we mislaid JA due to some oversight but he knew where the pub stop was and was wrestling with his lunch when we arrived. Geoff Warr is continuing his ice cream themed restoration series. First the 99 (Norton twin) then Cornet (TWN). He is now looking for that rare parts bin special of the late 60s the Matchless Magnum. There is a super-injunction in force regarding who may not be taking a bike of the marque to Switzerland and the reason for it.
