I am looking for the ignition advance setting for a 1961 G80CS. I have been given 1/2" or 9/16" BTDC. Can anyone give me a definitive figure, please?
Thanks - Clive

Re: G80CS Ignition Setting
Yes !!
Depends on what fuel and height above sea level , position of planets etc.
The initial timing position is in this day and age is really to get you running, then it's road test to see if it pinks under load, if not you can advance it a bit till it just pinks , then back it off. Visa versa for it pinking strait away. there' s no hard and fast setting, it's more of an art form!
If it goes well at 1/2" don't pink and you are happy, then tha'ts the setting.

Re: G80CS Ignition Setting
ignition timing is done with the auto or manual lever fully advanced.

Exact Rob, for the auto type advance half a wooden clothes peg works as a good wedge to hold the unit at full advance.

Re: G80CS Ignition Setting
I have found that 7/16in BTDC on compression stroke with full advance of the manual ignition control works well with my 1960 G80CS, my 1956 G80CS & 1961 G80TCS. I have set many others to that figure with best results. These bikes are now retired from their hard desert racing days & are used only on paved roads. I retard fully to start & about 1/3rd for lower speeds on local roads. Cheers, Don.
