loose kick start

Post by 27col »

The kick start on my AJS model 31 keeps on working loose. I have fitted it with a high tensile clamping bolt, but it is still working loose and damaging the splines. Has anybody come across this problem and , more to the point, can anybody suggest a solution. I drilled and tapped into the end of the splined shaft so as to be able to fit a retaining washer. This at least, stops the kickstart from coming too far off the splines but does not help the original problem.

I had this problem on a commando ( similar gearbox) it was caused by the diameter of the retaining bolt being too small.....ie. in relation to the kickstart shaft. i bored out the kickstart hole slightly and fitted an oversize bolt with the same thread configuration....result, no lateral movement end of problem.

To John Turnbull, Many thanks to you for your suggestion. I had come to more or less the same conclusion myself. I will put it on the list for attention during next winter's lay-up.

To John Turnbull.
I don't suppose that you remember the diameter that you used, do you?
