Damaged chaincase

Post by Herman Geubels. »

Had a hairy experience today, on my way to a local run with my '61 G12 CSR. The front chain broke while pulling away at a traffic light, wrapped around the clutch assembly and blocked the rear wheel instantly. The broken chain also "punctured" the chaincase from the inside-out, taking out one screw and two pieces of both halves at the bottom rear of the chaincase. The pieces are still partly attached to the chaincase halves. Is there a way of repairing this kind of damage by welding or another technique ? If not, would the engine function normally (not lose its oil via the puncture) leaving it as it is ?

Damaged chaincase

Hi Herman, anything can be repaired or reclaimed,it all depends on how much money it costs, and if its worth it.
Seeing the parts are still attached it, does sound like it would be worth taking the chain cases to someone who can weld alloy and having them repaired.
The engine would function normally but would also lose oil from the damage, probably resulting in another chain parting ways!
