I eventually found where the big washer came from and it is nothing to do with the distributor, its not even original and is a Previous owners bodge.
However I am still searching around and checking everywhere to ensure I have all the correct parts fitted to my 18D2 dizzy fitted to my 59 G12. I am convinced that something is wrong due to all the play along the shaft, something has to be missing somewhere!
Does anybody have one they can check which is apart or confirm from memory what should be there compared to my drawing?

So where did the washer come from Bruce? The suspense is killing me ;)

There should be a rotor on the end of the shaft :D

I think it boils down to what should be under the pinion gear, should there be a washer and/or shim and if so what thickness is it or does it have a part number. The manual description is very poor.
I have searched every manual and online resource I can find and can't get an answer, even for bikes like Nortons that were fitted with 18D2 dizzy.
There are a lot of oblique references and nods to shims and washers but nothing that I could find that provided that feeling of knowing what they meant by them.
The only way of removing most of the play is to pull the dist out so there is a gap between the timing cover plate and the dist body but that doesn't seem right, I am sure there is a packer or shim missing.
