Tyres
Hi all
I've just purchased my first British bike and need to know which are the best front and rear tyres.
Not bothered about cost or how long they last, just want the best period looking tyres for the bike.
For a matchless csr 650
Cheers Iain

I'm a fan of Dunlop K70's front and rear, or K70 rear and Avon Speedmaster front. They're not necessarily the stickiest of tyres but you wrote that your criterion is tyres with a 'period look'.
(My K70 rears have lasted 6,000 miles and the front Speedmaster twice that with quite hard use).
'Mitas' tyres have similar tread design and have a good reputation.

Re: Tyres
Good old Avon Speedmaster MkII front and Safety Mileage MkII rear. Always were good tyres. I used them in the 60s and 70s and liked them so much that I used them on my Honda 550 to ride to work in London in the early 80s. They have obviously improved compounds since then.
Best for period look. Modern tyres have such a low profile it looks wrong. We're lucky we have a 19" rim on the back. When they fit a modern tyre to an 18" rim it looks terrible. Rear wheel/tyre has got to look bigger than the front.
Just re-read your post, what year is your CSR? I'm not sure if the later CSRs used 18" rims on the back. Somebody please put us right on that one. Think it was about 1967/68 that everyone started fitting 18" rims with a 4.00 section tyre.

Re: Tyres
64 onwards the wheels went to 18" with Norton hubs for the CSR the tourers used 18" from 63 on. 63 was the last year the CSR used 19" wheels with AMC full width hubs.
