I believe the felt covering was re-introduced, necessary in my opinion when b/e shells are used ( in these twins ). I'm sure the Club can still supply the whole filter replacement too. However, it is possible to re-cover the filter with new felt, just stitch it on with a strong wax thread.
I have had several 1960 twins and non have had any felt on the filter, but I have always put a Norton Commando external oil filter on the return line when I have purchased them. So in my experience they can be used without the felt with an external filter. But I have also known people use them without any felt without problems.
Up to 1959 the felt part was detachable. However for 1960 the filter was changed to the style you have which is a one piece unit with a coarse mesh covered with a fine mesh. In 1964 they went back to the 1959 style of felt filter.
The oil filter you require is part number 028496, this is the one that superseded the 1960 wire filter. The filter MUST be cleaned every 3000 miles otherwise it may become clogged up!
That's the trouble when you get the part numbers from old books, it was from Freddy Neill's twins book which covers engines from 1955 to 1965. It is in the table of oiling modifications on the 1962 Models section (page 10).
I have only just seen this discussion thread. I also have a 1960 G12CSR and also a copy of an official 1960 parts list which lists it as part number 026139 'all models, filter, assembled'. But Steve at AMC Spares recently cautioned me that the earlier filter design had a tendency to collapse and was in fact eventually replaced by a enhanced version around 1961-2 part number 023331F 'chrome nut oil return valve with gauze felt filter'. Supply has been a bit thin on the ground but I eventually managed to buy one from Andrew Engineering (Leigh) Limited just one week ago ( www.andrew-engineering.co.uk ) who in fact had just finished manufacturing a new supply of stock of this particular part that afternoon. Comes complete as a fully assembled filter unit and cost was GBP 35.53 including carriage in UK. And I'd guess they would be be happy to ship to the US also. Good luck. Hope this helps. Best regards. Keith
I am making progress on the CSR and catching up on old posts. I saw this and wanted to pass along what I received from Andrews Engineering (yes, it was a year ago. Man! how time gets away from you). The were happy to ship it to the USA.
Thanks
