If you are still stumped after your checks, take it to a local repair shop and see what they say it is, then go home and decide if you want to have a crack at it yourself or not.
Cheers ray.

Thanks for the suggestion Ray but there is nobody near enough to me and I'm worried that the stalling when I shut the throttle means that the engine is going to seize

Re: G12 CSR engine noises
I have it on good authority that these engines do clatter a bit on the top end. however we need to know if you have located the area of extra noise yet?
Does the engine run well, on say 1/4 throttle with out smoke from the exhaust? If so, you might just have a blocked pilot jet in the carb causing it to cut out at idle. Also is it firing on both cylinders evenly and did your noise suddenly appear or has it been a gradual thing.
There is a past post re noise on a 650 which could be the timed breather valve loose, worth a check in the search button to read it.
If, as you say you are not too keen at pulling it apart you will have to find someone to help , have yourself the handbook and parts list to hand and make notes on everything you do and what came off first , you will not go wrong if you take it step by step and have the necessary tools.

No, the timed breather noise was on a lightweight. It seems to me your best way would be to go to your local section and ask for help. Hampshire, anyone out there? Dave.

Oh er missus!! I stand corrected on the breather issue, how on earth did I mistake that?????? but some good pointers for noise searching!
As Dave says, get along to the local section. Only so much can be done without physically seeing the bike.

Yes, you local section should have lots of people that know what a 650 sound like. You might even find someone is local to you and will come round to your place and have a listen.
My nearest section is 3/4 hour away and im sure I could get someone round for a listen (and a cup of tea)But then, I would do the same for the next club member. Its part of club life. Dont suffer alone

Thanks for the suggestions about the local branch I'll have to take it for a spin locally first as I haven't ridden it for a few months because of the noises and I thought it was about to blow up Maybe I'm being a bit paranoid but thanks for all the suggestions

Re: G12 CSR engine noises
Hi everyone,
After all the marvellous advice, I thought I'd clarify my previous reply. I do live in Hampshire but in the opposite corner from the section. This isn't a massive problem but, due to the engine noises, I've only ridden the bike a little way because I feared that the noises were terminal and I didn't want to risk blowing it up! Plus, the tendency to stall when I shut the throttle has made me think it is on the point of seizure.
However, the fact that it starts up again so willingly and runs nicely, if noisily, suggests that, perhaps, it isn't as bad as I thought. Trouble is, I no longer trust my own skills. Whereas, as a nipper, I would do any work on my bikes just to keep them running, now that I am older (wiser?) I realise that I don't really have the skills nor the specialist knowledge, to do a good job. Added to that an inability to identify the source of noises and you may see my problem.
I've also let the MoT expire but I think I may book it in again and, if it isn't in imminent danger of blowing up (good oil circulation, willingness to rev, no particular increase in smoke), it may well be OK to ride the 5 miles to the test station. The guys there are bike enthusiasts and may well be able to identify the noise.
Anyway, thanks to all the advice given here, I do feel more equipped to take a closer look.
Thanks again
Mark
