side stand spring

Post by Roderick »

Where does this spring attach to on a 1960 Duplex frame?

(I seem to remember that there should be a small hole in the bottom frame rail but if there is on this frame, it's been covered over when painted).

Of course, I did use the search facility first before asking but for whatever reason I could not turn up anything relevant. I have now found CR's note.

Thanks tho',

This popped up straight away in the search for 'side stand spring' in the search box!

I think it's the one Rob H. is referring to?

Edited for spelling mistooks!

Oh How I hate that spring, on all my other bikes , Triumphs, BSA's etc all the side stands stays DOWN when the bike is taken off it, but no not on the Matchless it springs up. this caused great embarrisment over the last weekend when moving bikes around in the garage, I had just moved the Speed Twin and decided to moved my recently renovated 49 G80, only a couple of feet, forgeting the stand pops up I got off lent it over onto the side stand, and wallah its on its way to the floor. I had to get a neighbour to help pick it up. fortunately no damage done other than a bent rear number plate. and a very red face, what a silly arrangement. I Hate it.

You can change it to stay down. Just move the spring position further forwards. You may need to make a small bracket with a hole in it to fit on the front stud. I have done this on mine and find it much better. Just don't forget to and leave it down when you ride off!!

Dave
I will look into that, thanks for the idea, I certainly wont leave it down, 47 years of bikes without stand retraction, one tends to get into a habit. Never had one but I believe Ducati do the same thing. Now thems is expensive if dropped.

My 1964 16 has two holes for the spring, one it stays down, the other it swings back up, its around 2" further forward.

I seem to remember that you modified yours with 'soft' closure and a toepiece for easier access. Mine retracts with such a 'clang' that it's impossible not to notice !
