Hi John
I fitted one a few weeks back. I definitely found it easier to fit it into the casing first and then lever it into the hole on the shaft with a screwdriver. If I remember correctly it doesn't need to be 'wound up' but best to fit it then loosely slip the outer case and lever on and try it. you'll soon find a happy setting. Don't forget to renew the oil seal (though it will still leak ;o(
