I am looking at a 57 G11 which seems to have an AMC box (pictures not overly clear). It is currently jumping out of first gear but can be held in by foot pressure to pull away etc. Is it a difficult or expensive job to overhaul these gearboxes. Trying to assess how much to allow for its repair.
Thanks
Peter

I had this problem on my G9 - fixed by replacing the spring in the outer case controlling the gearchange register. No need to dismantle the gearbox if this is all that is wrong.

It's usually the detent plunger that has rounded off, or its spring has broken. It screws in underneath like a drain plug, so quite easy to check or change. Dave.Edited by - dave16mct on 21 Feb 2012 1:09:35 PM

Thanks for the info. Does not seem to be a reason not to buy the bike anyway.
