Replacement rear wheel bearings.

Post by bruv »

Can anybody please help. I'm rebuilding the QD rear wheel of my 1957 G11 twin. The bearings are completely shot and need replacing. I see that it's possible to buy a complete rear wheel bearing assembly from JSL. Its part number is 900684. All I have to do now is re-mortgage the house to be able to afford it! Before I embark on this expenditure, can anybody who has experience of this assembly please help me with a few questions?
(1)Does it use taper or ball bearings?
(2)Are these bearings adjustable or is this no longer required?
(3)Are the bearings "sealed" or do I have to use external oil seals?
(4) Does the new kit come with fitting instructions and advice on how many of the original parts to discard or retain?
Any advice would be much appreciated. Kind regards, Bruv.

I picked up one of these assemblies very cheap, still boxed. It has roller bearings not adjustable, probably why I got it for a tenner, the owner deciding not to use it.
BUT, not sure about the assembly you are looking at will be the same.

I bought one a year or two ago. Fitted fine as per included instructions. Sold the bike since then so don't know about longevity.
They are sealed ball bearings, so no lubing reqd.
Ditto-no adjustment either.

£135 = I actually said 'bloody hell' out loud when I saw that !

I take it is not a standard SKF / RHP etc type bearing then ?

Pricey they may be, John, but they are "fit and forget" units (apart from the occasional shot of HMP grease). I fitted Andrew Engineering's cartridges front and rear on my G11, following the instructions supplied, and have since travelled over 8,000 miles without trouble and no sign of wear. I highly recommend 'em!
Best regards.
