1956 G11 B52 Gear box

Post by G15 Roy »

The problem is I can select all four gears with the engine not running, but as soon as the engine is running only 1st and 2nd can be found and the gear lever does seem to want to go pass the second position, it makes no difference whether you are riding or just ticking over as I have tried both. I have checked the primary chain tension and that is fine. This is freshly built bike on it first test ride today in-readiness for the polish IJR.

Roy , all you have to do is put all the gears back in the correct order . most likely you have at least one gear reversed or incorrect gaskets fitted
Like the Haynes manual always says , reassemble in the reverse order that you took it a part

was it ever complete or is it a collection of parts from your stall ?

Pity the B52 box you sold me changes perfectly, mind you all the bearings were shot, as was the small kickstart gear!
First and second are selected by the same selector arm, so I would suggest you look at the selector arm for 3rd and 4th. In my experience wear on the selector fork can lead to either difficulty with getting into gear or jumping out. Other possibilities would be wear in the cam assembly or possibly the clutch not releasing but I would have thought it would then crunch slightly getting into first gear. My experience of the later clutch with the slots in the clutch plates rather than ears can suffer much more from poor release as the driving inserts on the inside of the clutch basket become worn. Its hard to dress them back whereas its quite easy to dress the ears on the CP clutch plates or dress the slots in the clutch basket. I fitted the earlier clutch to my box.

It has a new 5 plate centre and all new plates and the clutch seem fine.

All four gears now working OK don't ask what is was as I can't answer all I did was replace all or most of the gear selection mechanics in the outer cover.
