My main stand has too much forward travel, is this because the lugs that meet the stops on the frame have worn away?
If so what size should they be ?
The other problem with the stand is that the holes for the steel bushes which take the axle are oval. Any suggestions please?

Check that the stand has been fitted the correct way round, if it is fitted "backwards" this tends to give too much travel and it is difficult to get the bike to sit with the rear wheel off the ground.

It is also 'normal' that te contact points wear and this will also make the stand go over too far. A little dob of weld is the cure in this case.

I have tried fitting the stand the other way around and it looks perfect, but.
This puts the hook for operating it on the right hand side of the bike and upside down.

What year and model are we talking about??
Not many of the bikes had an extension for the stand, is it original? or has someone added later? If so are you sure that the stand had not been "turned" before this was added?

My bike is G9 of 1960 vintage.
You may be right about hook being an addition.

Re: oval holes for steel bushes.
A cheap and easy 'bodge' that works very well is to use an old set of feeler guages as shims.
With a pair of tin snips, trial and error and patience you will be able to shim out the ovality, making the steel bush a good fit in the hole again.
You can locktight the strips in if needed.
This and suitably located and filed blobs of weld makes your stand work like new.
This will not impress the perfectionists, but..................!
Good luck
