Hi Alan, To start you need to retard the ignition, which is pulling the lever towards you, it is best to try initially with the air control lever open, ie again towards you. The carburettor will need a goodly 'tickle' ie. 'till the tip of your finger is wet!.My G11 starts first kick with the air lever open, needing to be closed on only the coldest days. The advance/retard position is confusing, 'cos my '48 G3 of years gone by was exactly the opposite.
