Fuel tap filters

Postby helloluketurner » Wed Feb 07, 2018 9:34 am

I'm in the midst of rebuilding my carb & like all jobs, they've led to more.

I drained the fuel tank at the weekend so I could strip, clean rebuild my fuel taps. The RH side was leaky & the LH (reserve) was blocked.

Both taps were missing the narrow gauze filters (https://www.feked.com/1-8-x-7-16-round- ... ilter.html), she seems to have been happy without them & I've now fitted an in-line filter between the tank & the carb. Does that sound okay?

Hi

The in line filter will compensate for the lack of screens on the taps, however you risk debris from the tank damaging the fuel taps - I'd run with what you have until the taps need replacement.

You could solder on replacement screens but I've yet to find anyone supplying the material short of cannibalising another tap.

I've just found this useful video ^

Cheers both. I'll add that to the list of jobs!

Yuo can buy the mesh to make filters I did mine, one direct to the tap, the other on a piece of copper brake pipe to make a reserve level tap.

I assume they just sit on this flat surface?

I can’t see any evidence of there ever being filters.

Hi

Can you post a photo of the taps in side view - are you sure they're fuel taps, (originally)? (reminiscent of gas taps in the school chemistry lab).

Apologies for the dark photo.

I haven’t got a clue on their originality, they were on the motorbike when I bought it.

Like mick D say's they look like gas taps or the type of tap fitted to machine tools for controlling the cutting coolant.
