AJS m20 positive or negative earth

Post by Leif Ost. »

I have recently bought an AJS m20 from 1953 (chassinumber 98016 motor number 53/20 16670). I want to know if the electrical system shall be positive or negative earthed? In the book MATCHLESS & AJS ALL POST-WAR ROAD SINGLES & TWINS RESTORATION by Roy Bacon says that it should be a positive earth, but in an instruktion book I have says that it should be a negative earth.

AJS m20 positive or negative earth

The AJS single cylinder models switched to +ve earth for 1952, according to the Pitmans book "The book of the AJS", and continued thusly at least until 1957. And it shows the wiring diagram for it, and also for the 1951 -ve earth models.

So the twins would be the same ?

And as long as your battery and generator and regulator are in agreement, doesn't really matter which way you wire it ?? Unless you want to be strictly original..

hopethishelps,
Rohan.
