Thank you everyone for the feedback.
The spacer between bearing and sprocket was in place and the chain did not chew anything, so that's not it.
We're not opening the cases before finding a replacement, so I can't comment on the bearing width or thrust washers
suggestions, but we'll keep it in mind. As was said, the "Look Ma, no rollers !" trick is probably where we should stop
asking ourselves deep questions !

It looks like a real gold mine of AJS/Matchless documentation, so I'm posting it here in case not everyone is aware of it.
