Can get complicated if you do not know how to get things apart and what to find inside. You really do need parts list and workshop manual. I recall my first twin 63 650 CSR . I was going to clean / check the crank case filter. It was empty?? So I ordered the parts, filter plus the cups/washers, what ever you choose to call them. They would not fit??? When I took a torch to look inside the 2 cups /washers were actually there, jammed tight up the far end. Took a bit of getting out. Probably a PO had the same problem, so just left out the filter etc he was not able to fit. You may find similar problems that need correcting. So the books will help you to know what to expect. Whats wrong whats missing what's not correct.

I am interested in how you get on Shifter. Reading things is all well and good, but doing a job for the first time is usually illuminating, to say the least. I shall be doing the same job for the first time on my M20 when the weather keeps me in.

Yeah, after a few beers no doubt - could end up with a felt filter where a felt filter has no right to be

You should be OK Ron, just make sure it goes in your bike. Unless its the lot that took a twin engine to bits at Gloucebury jampot rally.
Which got a tray of empty beer glass on top the crank cases instead of the top end.

Beer should always go in the top end.

All done quite a straight forward easy job even though I do most of the work to all the cars and bikes I have and had its nice to have a little advice when you haven't done a particular job before well hopefully all the work on her is done now and that's the last job on her for a while well I hope so.
