Piston Identification, 1954 G80S

Post by Rohan B. »

Your domed piston sounds like one of the many optional higher compression pistons offered in later years, to take advantage of better fuels. It won't be in the spares list, but would probably be in the Wellworthy catalog - a well known manufacturer.

Running without oil sounds sad, good luck with the rebuild. I'm sure you know the timing side bush has to have minimal clearance for the oil to get to the big end. The big test for the conrod is how much up and down movement it has - as new they are firm, with no movement at all. But can move side-to-side. Its not unknown that running without oil has caused very little if any damage, but inspect carefully.

If you are getting a lot of sooting up, its not impossible that the clattery noise is a valve sticking. Check that they are not carboned up in the guide, and that the guides are not excessively worn to allow a lot of blowby.

Some grades and types of oil cause more sooting than others, although good rings help here a lot...

hopethishelps,
Rohan.

How do I get the Wellworthy catalog. Do they have e-mail or website.
I have also heard, that somebody produces camshafts, HS, for competitions.
Do You know where ??
Kind regards Tom
