1961 G80CS Ignition Timing

Post by ranger »

Bike has standard NC1 mag, points correct. I have set up the timing at 1/2 inch below TDC with manual lever fully forward ie fully advanced. Bike starts well with some retard and ticks over well. However, bike runs best at speed with lever fully back, retarded. I would have thought that it should run best on fully advanced. Is this odd or have I got something wrong? Any ideas?

Yes Tim, you have got something wrong. What do you mean you set the timing 1/2" 'below' top dead centre? Before TDC or after? Should be before TDC. If you are new to magneto timing it is easy to have something slip as you give things a final tighten or you can easily confuse yourself with which way the magneto turns when the engine is running. I suggest you check things again, you've got something wrong. Don't worry, we all do it no matter how much practice we have. Cheers, BOB
