For those who've been following this trek, I'm nearly ready for MoT test.

I haven't sorted the dynamo. A trip to a specialist with growler confirmed that, despite motoring nicely, the armature's shot. Will have a charger at work as well as home until I can afford the £100 for the armature and new regulator. Need insurance and helmet yet.

But I do have a question I hope someone will help with (probably one of three people). After getting new tyres (stayed with Avons) I noticed that when hurriedly slapping the bike together to get out of the rented garage, I hadn't paid attention to the inadequate engagement of the nuts on the studs securing the front brake anchor stay. I replaced the studs with new ones from the Club, despite the fact that the others were in the 'bike when I got it and had been fine - in those days I was less safety conscious. The new ones were longer and enabled me to get the full depth of the nut on, as well as washers. But should I fit washers? And if so, should they be spring ones?

Why isn't the anchor stay next to the slider, instead of having the mudguard's fork bracing nest to the slider? The bracer would hold the stay on even if the nuts came off!

I know you must think me mad, but I tried it that way round out of interest, but of course it massively pre-tensioned the fork brace which failed to sit square.

Just as a comment, Jampot Spares bits were great. Studs finished nicely. Nuts which had clean edges and what my Dad referred to as a "right and wrong" side.

From an engineering viewpoint the brake stay should be next to the slider, consider the bending moment on the studs if fitted outside the mudguard stay. £100 for dynamo armature? Jampot spares do them for £52.50 +Vat + postage, less than a £100.

Yes, that had occurred to me too, but it's clearly just not set up to be like that. Any thoughts on the washer front? I was really heading for the split (spring) variety.

As for the cost, I was factoring in the new regulator and the p&p. Don't need the latter until running with a dynamo.

Before anyone jumps in, I'd fail the MoT test (although I did manage to win a squash tournament at my club at Christmas so not entirely past it). The 'bike's ready for MoT.

I use plain washers at the top, no washer at all, spring, star or otherwise at the bottom and I never use lockwire on the tank bolts, just do them up properly.

Set up to be like it or not, both my bikes are set up that way, and I don't have a problem.

I also think the anchor should be next to the slider. The mudguard brace can be re-profiled (bent!) to fit correctly on top of the anchor. It has probably been mis-shaped in the past.

Ensure the bolt fixing the stay to the front hub is drilled and wired to the stay for safety. I nearly had a disaster because I ignored this advice.
